The plot of the book tells about the author’s life in the Soviet criminal underground. Demin (real name — Georgy Trifonov) in 1942, at the age of 16, was arrested for disobeying work orders. He was sentenced to two years of hard labor at a Moscow foundry, but was released due to illness. The author worked as an advertising artist, but due to an investigation by the secret police, he fled without documents and lived underground for several years, working in a gang of pickpockets.
